In Mbanta village is Obinwanne. He always had the progress of their family at heart. His words were “If my brother can graduate from higher institution, I know our family is balanced”. He never had contra thought about his said-brother.
As a boy who loved helping his brother, Obinwanne fell a victim of care.
In his early secondary, obinwanne dropped out of school in order to carry his brother along. School fees were so costly that Obi and his brother, Merua hardly pay half of them. This poised Obi to drop for Merua to proceed. He traveled nooks and crannies to raising money for his brother’s fees.
Ten years later, Merua graduated as a medical doctor. Obi’s mind was angel Gabriel’s. He asked from his brother the graduation date which he was reluctantly barked at to be five days from then. Obi felt embarrassed but was consoled by the thought of unity. He absent-mindedly laughed.
At every strategic positions are decorations for graduation ceremony of Merua. When Obi got to the venue expecting to be cheered, it was South Africa-Nigeria relationship.
Instead of being welcomed by his brother, Merua he yearned for who invited him. This was dramatic to Obi who thought that his brother was actually joking. He realized the certaintity when he was told to vacate a seat for a guest.
All stood akimbo and others supported their cheeks with hands as Merua gave his appreciative remarks. He said that though he survived, his antagonist was his brother, Obi. He said, “my people, it’s bad to have a greedy brother. My little brother, Obi was never happy that I was a student. I wonder if I was responsible for his dropout”. This popcorned Obi. He flashed back on the circumstances that led to his dropout. He left the venue in tears.
Two days later, Obi decided to visit Merua to know why he undressed him before his lust ones. He sighed and said, “it was because you refused to look for meetings to borrow the sum of one hundred and fifty thousand naira only for my clearance”. This caught Obi too sudden. He was dumbfounded and left there mouthsealed.
In Ndodo supermarket, Iroibe hauls wheelbarrow. He started the job after his termination from his working place.
It is not far to say that one is self-centred. It is not also too far to say that one is foolish. If you are favoured, you are called a wise man. But if reverse is the case, you will be termed foolish man.
Iroibe was the manager of a prestigious iron and steel industry in Ndodo city. He worked as the managing director until he sent for his brother who was an egg hawker. He used his position and employed him.
In the Iron and Steel Industry Limited, a high office holder dare not quarrel with any body. The rule is that he should terminate the victims’ employment.
He tried all he could to prevent the break of the policy but his younger brother remained his obstacle.
Ema’s frequent attempt was to implicate his brother, Iroibe. He broke into quarrel with him that his wage was too poor, “imagine my brother being paid eighty thousand naira monthly while I work overnight for mere forty thousand naira per month”. He went to Iroibe’s office and pulled off his shoe thinking that it was his because the shoe was alike with his. An attempt to stop him called the attention of the General Secretary (G.S), Dr. Edison achike who covered the drama with his hand set. He signed termination letter against Iroibe. This led him to start hauling wheelbarrow to feed his family.
As Obi was returning from Merua’s place, he found a wheelbarrow man who was sobbing. He advanced to the man who introduced himself as Iroibe. He asked Obi what he would do for him. He said, “nothing I was returning from my brother’s place and decided to meet you so as to know if wheelbarrow hauling is lucrative here only to found that you were sobbing. What is the problem?”. Iroibe could no more hide his feelings and broke to tears. He narrated his ordeals to him. He said, “despite that my younger brother led to my termination from work, he goes to bed with my newly married wife because she is gullible. She goes with him so that he could give her some money for food”. The story was an entertainment to Obi until he heard ‘goes to bed with my newly married wife’. He said, “it is heartbreaking to be dumb but not when compared to blindness. I think the conclusion is that it is better to help an alien than a brother”. He narrate his own side of the story. This consoled Iroibe who had seen his sake as victims of care.
After a long dialogue between the two victims, they parted for their homes.
Five weeks later, Iroibe’s wife, Nkiru became pregnant. Her actions with Ema threw the pregnancy to questions. The conclusion was that genetic test should be carried out. It was later optimised that Iroibe was not responsible. What should this be? Sorrow for the broken heart? People are wicked.
